ONA offers professional liability insurance to its members. The following provides an overview of this plan and the coverage that it provides.

What is Malpractice Insurance?
It is insurance coverage which protects the participants in the plan in the event that payment of damages have been levied against the participant for professional negligence arising out of services rendered in the practice of their profession as registered or graduate nurses or allied health personnel.

Who is Eligible For Coverage?
All registered nurses, graduate nurses and other allied health personnel whom ONA is certified to represent are automatic participants in the program, provided they regularly pay dues or the equivalent to ONA.

What is Covered?
The policy ensures against liability arising out of the rendering, intended or failure to render, health services including public health services and teaching and instruction on the subject of the Insureds’ profession.

What if There is Other Valid and Collectible Insurance Available to me?
If this is available and covers a loss also covered by this policy, the insurance afforded by this policy shall be in excess of.

Are There Policy Limits?
Yes.

1. $1,500,000 per loss

2. $6,000,000 per Aggregate limit per member

Are There Any Exclusions?
Yes, nurses who work at an agency for which Ontario Nurses’ Association does not have the bargaining rights. Punitive and Exemplary Damages are also excluded.

Where is This Coverage in Effect?
Coverage applies to cases brought forward by ONA members in ONA bargaining units where the member worked at the time of the incident.

How Do I Make a Claim?
A member who suspects that an incident may lead to a Malpractice Claim being filed is to notify the:

The Policy in effect may override any statements on this website.
