Black History Month 2012

January 31, 2012

February is Black History Month, a time to honour the achievements of black Canadians with ancestral roots from Africa. The Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) joins with workers across the province in recognizing the contributions black Canadians have accomplished to make Canada the nation we are today.

Background

In December 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month, following a motion introduced by the first black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, the Honourable Jean Augustine. Last year, the Government of Canada launched an online museum, the Canadian Black History Virtual Museum.
