CNO Quality Assurance Guidelines

  • Each year, starting in December 1999, nurses are mailed a declaration regarding Quality Assurance (QA) with the renewal of their College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) certificate of registration. ONA recommended that the self-assessment tool was the most straightforward process in which to meet the QA obligation. Members need to retain their self-assessment record.
  • QA is a legislated obligation under the RHPA. Each regulated college is required to adopt a QA mechanism to ensure the ongoing competence of members. This includes a random assessment of members. The assessment is a confidential document. There is no requirement to share the information from the QA program with the employer.
  • Should a member need a self-assessment tool, it can be downloaded from the CNO website here.
  • In 2003, the Practice Review component of Quality Assurance will randomly select 383 nurses (RNs and RPNs) to participate in the assessment of their knowledge, skill and judgement in relation to the standards of practice.
  • To learn more about the Practice Review, see the Quality Assurance section directly on the CNO website or order the fact sheet by Fastfax 1-877-963-7502 (document #44026) .
