ONA is seeking to hire a Labour Relations Officer that specializes as an Economist, Labour Market Researcher and Collective Agreement Contract Analysis Specialist. As a member of the Negotiations Team, and working within the boundaries of ONA's governing and administrative policies, the vision and strategic outcomes, this position will be accountable for conducting economic and labour market research and collective agreement contract analysis to support collective bargaining. This position will be a resource to the All-Sector Strategic Bargaining Project Team (ASSBPT), ONA's Central Bargaining Project Teams and District Service Teams (DSTs), and will also maintain all contract analysis databases.

This is what else you can expect from this dynamic role:

  • Conduct economic and labour market research and statistical analysis to support collective bargaining (e.g. Consumer Price Index statistics, Average Industrial Wages, Ministry of Labour Settlement Data, Gross Domestic Product statistics, Private Health Sector Financial Statements, and Ministry of Finance statistics).
  • Analysis and comparison of collective agreements to support collective bargaining and interest arbitration.
  • Act as a resource on the development and delivery of education to members and staff on issues relating to the economic climate, labour market research and contract analysis in support of collective bargaining.
  • Maintain ONA’s contract analysis databases.
  • Draft submissions and position statements to the government and other agencies.
  • Keep management, staff and members informed on current issues, economic climate, legislative changes, trends and developments relating to collective bargaining.
  • Provide written reports on areas of activity, as required.
  • Collaborate with Hospital Labour Disputes Arbitration Act (HLDAA) Specialists on the development of economic and labour market arguments.

What we are looking for:
The successful candidate will possess –

  • University Degree or Diploma in Economics (Business or Commerce), Labour/Industrial Relations (or in a related field). Master’s in Economics or Industrial Relations or equivalent is preferred.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years as an Economist and minimum of five (5) years of experience in Labour or Industrial Relations is required (or equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
  • The ideal candidate would also be a Registered Nurse.
  • Experience in contract analysis, particularly in the public or health care sectors is ideal.
  • Experience with teaching/coaching/mentoring staff an asset.
  • Alternative Dispute and Conflict Resolution and/or Advanced Mediation and Workplace Conflict Coaching Certification is an asset.
  • Excellent client relations, communication and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to speak other languages is considered an asset.

The successful candidate must be able to travel, possess a valid driver’s license and have access to an automobile for business use.
