Past Teleconnect: Medical marijuana and the workplace- Human rights considerations for ONA members

October 2, 2018

Currently in Canada, it is only legal for individuals to obtain and consume cannabis for medical purposes. This will change as of October 17, 2018 at which time new federal legislation governing cannabis use in Canada will take effect.

This presentation is intended to provide an introduction on the impending cannabis legalization and an overview of some of the human rights issues ONA’s members may encounter in the workplace. We focus on cannabis use for medical purposes. This includes caring for patients who are authorized to use medical cannabis, as well as labour relations implications of medical cannabis use, employer policies, disclosure obligations and benefits coverage.

This teleconnect will be of particular interest to Human Rights and Equity Bargaining Unit Representatives, Safe Return to Work/Work Accommodation Representatives, Bargaining Unit Presidents and Local Coordinators.
