Statement on the Public Inquiry into Long-Term Care

September 21, 2018

Elizabeth Wettlaufer’s crimes against residents of long-term care facilities and patients in home care is a shocking tragedy and our hearts go out to their families.

The Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) welcomed this long-overdue public Inquiry into the deplorable state of some of our long-term care homes.

ONA believes the Inquiry provides the opportunity to understand the facts, root causes and solutions that can be put in place to prevent this tragedy from ever happening again.

It is in this spirit that ONA will also fully participate in Phase 2 of the Inquiry and will assist with recommendations for changes to protect and improve the care of long-term care residents.

Regarding any lawsuit, ONA has not been served and therefore cannot comment.

ONA looks forward to receiving the report and recommendations of the Commissioner, and to participating in positive change for our long-term care residents, who need and deserve high-quality care.
