ONA First Vice-President Angela Preocanin was acclaimed Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) at CFNU’s Biennial Convention last week, June 5-9, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Preocanin replaces Pauline Worsfold of the United Nurses of Alberta, who has retired from the CFNU effective immediately.

A registered nurse who has served in executive positions at Local 75 of ONA over the past two decades, Preocanin has worked in thoracic surgery, head and neck, urgent care and home hemodialysis. She will continue in her current role as First Vice-President on ONA’s Board of Directors.

CFNU is the umbrella group for nursing unions in nine provinces across Canada, representing over 250,000 nurses and 40,000 associate student members.

Reuniting in-person for the first time in four years, more than 1,000 nurses attended the CFNU Biennial, for which the theme “Together we got this” speaks to the crucial role solidarity plays in creating positive change for nurses and Canadian communities and health-care systems.

Preocanin says it is a great honour to be entrusted by CFNU’s membership to contribute to the advocacy needed to get Canada’s health-care system back on track.

“Canada’s public health care system is still recovering from the catastrophe of the pandemic, and the levels of nurse staffing are awful everywhere in Canada. Together we can find and advocate for solutions,” she said.

Linda Silas, with two decades at the CFNU helm as President, is a well-known and passionate spokesperson for nurses’ issues and labour rights. She was president of the New Brunswick Nurses Union from 1990 to 2000.
